Our friends and neighbors in the Gulf Coast region need our help.

When I travel, I feel that all I meet are neighbors and friends, no matter how near or far they may live. I have been lucky enough to visit the beautiful, warm and timeless city of New Orleans several times; Mississippi and the other Gulf Coast areas hit by Katrina were on my travel "wish list." Regardless of whether we have met them or visited their home towns, all who live in these places are our neighbors and friends, and we need to help them:

Please go to the Red Cross site and do what you can.

Yes, Brett, I agree. The only bright side (however faint) of this terrible tragedy is that with this occurring right here in our own backyard, it actually showed the nakedness of our emperor. It seems that even though most everyone has some connection with Iraq--be it a soldier or contractor--they cannot really fathom how badly things have gone over there. The Katrina fallout was impossible to ignore. I loved Ted Kennedy's comments yesterday before he questioned Supreme Court nominee Roberts, in which he noted that Katrina makes clear how we have failed our nation's poor and need to do better.
