Yes! Someone finally said it!

Here, in Slate, Mark Obbie speaks the truth about what it means (or doesn't) to be President of the Dallas Bar Association or the Texas Bar Association. I am especially impressed by Obbie's forthrightness, in light of the fact that he once worked for the Texas Lawyer.

This week, that fine antithesis of journalism continued its apparent campaign for the award titled, "Who can stick a nose farthest up Harriet Miers' ass?" This campaign has thus far included such stellar efforts as a story with the title, "Texas Attorneys Support Miers," which talks not about a poll of all Texas lawyers, but rather quotes a few Texas GOP operatives like Kay Bailey Hutchison and the like who happen to also be lawyers and--guess what? They all like Miers and want her to be confirmed!

Oh, and when a person sends an email to the authors of that fine article from her personal email account, complaining about such a slanted and inaccurate headline , you know what the Texas Lawyer editors do? They flex the atrophied muscles of their research skills, track her down at her law firm and telephone her there in the middle of the work day to see if she intended her complaint letter to be submitted as a letter to the editor for publication. An intimidation tactic? You tell me.

Hmm. Does the tone of this post, coupled with my other recent rants, officially win me the title of "curmudgeon"?

The call at your office from Texas Lawyer is truly creepy. One of the benefits of being a corporate slug rather than a "real" lawyer is that I've never had to participate in local bar activities, and I've never even read a copy of Texas Lawyer magazine.---Carolyn

Carolyn, you are so lucky! I really just read it to catch up on the comings and goings of lawyers I know. The TL's coverage of the Miers affair was shameless. There is no other word for it.
